TEL'S Partyline service takes On an added dimension this month, when it links up with Pacific Northwest Bell's GAB-Line in Seattle. The Vancouver-Seattle fink, planned to be in place until the end of Expo 86, will enable Partyline users and GAB-Line users to talk IN VANCOUVER a world peace campaign, called A Peal For Peace, will happen at noon on Sept. 16. It will take the form of One Minute of Silence, followed by One Moment of Sound. The minute of silence will be set aside for both individual and col- lective reflection, while the mo- ment of sound (everything from the pealing of church bells to the honking of horns) will be the sym- bolic celebration of life and human kinship. These same moments will be shared with more than 50 countries around the world. Various private and public events will take place at this time. In Vancouver, Mayor Michael Harcourt has proclaimed this day “A Peal For Peace Day”’ as has been done in many other cities across Canada. Austin Repath, who has been on a National Tour for A Peal For Peace since early June of this year, has collected more than 40 such proclamations from mayors of cit- jes across Canada. And he has received similar proclamations from the premiers of four pro- vinces, and anticipates more. Repath will be nearing the last leg of his tour when he arrives in Vancouver on Aug. 23 to par- ticipate in Vancouver’s Journey To Peace Festival, an all day celebra- tion being held at B.C. Place Stadium. “The whole idea of A Peal For Peace — this moment of silence and sound — is to give people a chance to share their hopes and concerns for peace with others around the world,’’ says Repath. “It’s not a religious of political thing,’ explains Repath, ‘It’s just a desire that everyone has in com- mon with the rest of humanity, and this is a chance for people to be aware of that ... a way of focusing their thoughts towards a shared goal.” So, whether it’s in a car, at work or school, at one of the many public events organizee in the Vancouver area — or in heir own way by themselves, people can share and participate in this sym- bolic focus on peace. to each other on an informal con- ference call. “Expo 86 was the catalyst for this project and we think it can help in a small way to promote tourism in B.C.,”* said Vicky Parr, product manager for Partyline. “But more than that, there's been a mutual interest between the 1 (- NEILSON B~|' ~=WILLOPACKS .
