Sandwich boards illegal - - Frem Page 1 and Traffic Bylaw, sandwich boards or placards displayed on sidewalks are illegal. ’ Phillips further specified that the bylaw says no ob- jects are allowed to be plac- ~ ed on the street or sidewalk which would obstruct or im- pede traffic. Fred Smith, city deputy director of development and licensing, explained in his report the city has received a rash of complaints, in-. cluding ‘one from the North Shore White Cane Club, ex- pressing its concern about the signs’ hazard to blind persons. Most recently, complaints have been received from handicapped persons, ex- pressing similar concerns . ‘The proliferation of sandwich. board signs has become so great that they now pose an obstruction to the free movement of pedes- trian traffic,’’ Smith said. “They are heavy and very stable and would cause anyone to trip and fall should a person walk into one,’ he said. ‘If the sign were then to fall on top of the individual, even more severe injury could result.”’ Said /Smith: ‘‘The actual number of sandwich board type signs is ever increasing, and they are generally con- centrated on sidewalks dur- ing the summer months when pedestrian traffic is at ‘its heaviest.’ _ A staff member, who surveyed Lonsdale Avenue from the foot to 23rd Street on August 20, counted 89 signs on the sidewalks. “They (the merchants) will be requested to remove the signs or face remedial action as stipulated in the ci- ty’s bylaws,”’ Smith said. 2 TPP Erte eRAT Rett monensin LOAN EMR TR Miata gta wen oe AUTEN eA fT DTOT Gogg em Atta sey LO NT Serle ree ne Fg ett > “NEWS photos Stuart Davis SANDWICH boards on Lonsdale, put out by merchants to advertise their store or restau- rant, have been increasing, blocking pedestrian traffic.
