Shop around for business licences

A BUSINESS LICENCE is a
necessary fact of life for any
entrepreneur.

But how many owners
‘shop around”’ for a licence
before deciding upon a
business location?

Every municipality or city
sets its own licence fee rates
for each different type of
business. Each municipality
also writes its own business
bylaws, which set the rules
for operating specific kinds
of businesses within its
boundaries. Some
municipalities have strict
rules, some are more jax.

if you serve the public out-of
your own home) you needa

You'll be dealing with a
licence inspector, who must
approve your premises and
confirm the information you
have provided before issuing
your business a licence. The
inspector also has the power
to suspend your business
licence if you are convicted
of a criminal offence, if you
are guilty of ‘'pross miscon-
duct’? in your business af-
fairs, or if your business
dealings with persons under
the age of 16 prove ‘tharm-
ful or dangerous’’ to these
juveniles,

premise you open will need
its own licence. H you move
your business within = the
municipality, you will have
to pay a fee equal to a per-
centage of your yearly
licence fse to have your
ficence altered. In West
Vancouver, the transfer fee
is 25 per cent (with a $15
minimum), in North Van-
couver it is 20 per cent (with
a $6 minimum in the City
and a $10 minimum in the
District).

Business licences are
issued on a calendar-year
basis. If you plan to open in
mid-summer, try to do so
after the month of July.
Unless your business
“becomes tiable to be licens-
ed’’ after July 31, you will
have to pay the full yearly

' fee. After July 31, the fee is

cut in half.
If your licence is suspend-
ed, you must close your
