Tough the park has only 5 km of hiking trails thus far, future plans call for an expansion to 50 km. LYNN HEADWATERS Regional Park on the North Shore promises to be a wilderness bonanza for all hikers and lovers of the rugged outdoors. Although not officially open yet for public use, Lynn Headwaters is already attracting scores of wanderlust hikers to its frestiiy-blazed trails. So far thousands of man-hours have gone into taming the wilder elements of the park so that all class of hikers might enjoy the preserve's primitive splen- dor. Currently, the 4,000- hectare park boasts a modest five kilometres of hiking ‘paths, but future plans, ac- cording to Greater Van- couver regional parks $ux..man Gordon Smith, call for about 50 kilometres of well-marked hiking routes. Lynn Headwaters is the largest of the GVRD- managed public parks around the lower mainland, and is the only one that can be rightly called a wilderness habitat. Most of the physicat work that has gone into the park’s trail design has been carried out under the auspices of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of B.C. FMC has sponsored the trail work along with the federal government who provided the funds for the project under a Canada Works initiative. In addition, the GVRD parks branch has hired three University of British Col- umbia students under a Challenge 85 grant to take stock of the park’s extensive biophysical inventory. tis hoped that once Lynn Headwaters’ ecology is defined, park users will have a heightened awareness and, thus, appreciation of the area’s environment. St. Mary's Community School’ also sponsored a Canada Works scheme in which Lynn Headwaters’ site was upgraded and facilities were constructed at the park’s' entrance for visitor use. There are two routes which lead into the park. One is Lillooet Road and the other is the lower Intake Road. Intake Road, according to GVRD parks branch will be the primary access route un- til ‘‘the Seymour side (Lillooet Road) is opened up and improvements to the east side of Lynn Creek are done.”’ Even though establish- ment of the park has been approved by the GVRD, the park lands have yet to be conveyed to the GVRD by North Vancouver City. Smith, though, pointed out that this legal hurdie for transfer of lands should be completed ‘“‘by the end of 1985.” The official park opening . BLIND Intl is scheduled for 1986. “GVRD knows people are using the area (currently) and because of this, GVRD will try to provide some staffing and trail informa- tion through the summer,’’ noted a GVRD memo. Anyone thinking of riding their motorcycles, dirt bikes or mountain bikes in the park, however, should think twice, A caretaker living on the park grounds will quickly enforce GVRD’s hardline regulation against bikes of any kind in the park. Even those wanting to camp will have to go elsewhere for the time being as camping is also banned in Lynn Headwaters. Smith said, however, that the GVRD just might pro- vide camp grounds at a future time ‘‘probably around Lynn Lake.’’ He stressed that camping facilities are not a part of the current plans for the park and such facilities might not be developed for at least 10 years. In all, Lynn Headwaters is a much welcomed refuge of virgin nature amidst the commotion of an urban landsvape. And the wonderful thing about the park is that it’s no more than just a few steps beyond all our backyards. FAITH. i | ue | il THERE ARE OTHER VERTICA!. AND VENETIAN BLINDS but none like LEVOLOR.
