sunday news March 11, 1984 CARYL Chamberlain didn’t imagine, when she began her career as a B.C. Tel installer four years ago, that one day she would address 400 high school students about her work — but she found herself doing just that recently at North Van- couver’s Argyle Secondary School. An ali morning § career seminar for grade 10, 11 and 12 girls at Argyle was arrang- ed by the North Shore Women’s Centre. The aim was to let the young women hear about ‘‘non-traditional’’ jobs — those in fields which have traditionally employed primarily men. everert ee se ee awe By LARRAINE CODE Appearing with Chamberlain were an engineer, a police office, a public relations specialist, a boilermaker and a lawyer — all women. Each had a portion of the program to speak about what her job entails, what her previous experience had been, what training had led to selection and qualifying for her position, and the salary levels accorded within her field. High school age young women are often unaware of craft jobs as employment possibilities. Hearing about women who are working in these kinds of jobs, and pro- fessional positions, helps them broaden their concepts of work fields open to women. Newsroom 985-2131 working world Chamberlain is one of ap- proximately 125 female B.C. Tel employees working in craft positions, such as cen- tral office and installation and repair. Chamberlain, an eight year B.C. Tel employee, worked in clerical positions when she first joined the company. She later became interested in a craft position, and signed up for electronics courses at B.C.1.T. Under the Com- pany’s tuition reimbursement plan, her fees were paid by B.C. Tel on completion of each course. After acceptance into B.C. Tel’s craft apprentice pro- gram, Chamberlain attended a six-week basic course at the companys’ Education Cen- tre, and then worked with a journeyman installer for a period of 3 months. A wide range of on-the-job courses are open to installers, from basic installation and repair to specialized technology courses, as well as safety and first aid courses. Chamberlain has completed several such courses and after four years on the job becomes a journeyman this spring. It was ‘‘yes’’ to both questions. The morning was judged a success by North Shore Women’s centre organizers and Argyle teacher Jennifer Erickson, who handled ar- rangements at the school. ‘‘It worked very well,’’ said Erickson. ‘‘We’ve had positive feedback from the students. And Caryi did a super job.”’ Already the Women’s Cen- tre has had queries about set- ting up similar events at other schools. The Argyle program was videotaped and the Women’s Centre will make available taped highlights for indivi- dual classroom use on request.
