MENTAL HEALTH CENTRE

THE DIRECTOR of the new North Shore Mental
Health Centre says the centre’s main priority will -
be to assist those patients who do not have the

motivation to seek help for their problems.

people afflicted with mental
illness are afraid to leave
their homes, or go to a
hospital or a psychiatrist’s
office.

‘“One of the characteristics
of mental illness is a
withdrawal from reality,’’ he
says, adding that the centre’s
staff is willing to visit pa-
tients in their homes and to
talk with them in their own
environment, a method
‘‘very effective way of deal-
ing with mentally ill people.”’

The North Shore Mental
Health Centre evolved out of
negotiations between the
local Mental Health Planning
Committee and the Ministry
of Health over the past
several years.

Last August, Turner was
approached to draw up pro-
posals for a centre to be bas-
ed on the North Shore, and
by the end of September he
was ready to present those
proposals to both the
Ministry and the committee.

Once approved, the wheets
began rolling to establish the
centre and, as of February,
1984, the centre began receiv-
ing its first referrals from the
Ministry of Human
Resources, family physicians,
psychiatrists, and the Lions
Gate Hospital’s emergency
department.

Turner, who has Masters’
degrees in both Social Work
and Science, has worked with
the Ministry of Health for 16
years, with 10 years of ex-
perience in community men-
tal health programs.

He says the centre has had
