FOR TERRY LEWIS it was. just too much — choppy, cool water, strong head- winds and temperatures that struggled over the 30 degree Celsius mark. After challenging the race leader Tom Price through the first two-thirds of the first-ever Canadian Inter- national Ironperson yele ‘finished in a tie for 15th place. ., Triathlon — and actually leading'the race at one point Lewis bowed to the elements, settling for third place. It was still a satisfying finish for the North Van- couver athlete, competing in his first Lronman event and finishing the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bicycle race and 26.2 mile run in a mere 11 hours, 28 minutes and 34 seconds. A second North Shore en- trant — Glen Colwill finished in a 15th place tie. newspaper . with Whistler publisher Tom Sutherland with a time of 13:56:52. The event was held in Pen- tiction a week ago, attrac- ting 25 entrants to what is only the fifth event of its kind in the world. They hit the waters of Okanagan Lake at 7:11 a.m. — scant minutes after the sun had risen — and the 22nd man, the last to finish the event, didn’t stop running until 16 and a half hours later. Lewis was in contention from the start. Although he trailed Price by seven minutes after the swim, he closed the gap quickly dur- ing the cycling event. Trailing by as much as nine minutes at various times on the Penticton to Osoyoos route, Lewis pushed Price hard in the final miles to finish a minute and a half behind him. The pace was too- much for Price — a mile into the marathon, he was felled by back spasms, severe enough to put him in hospital. Lewis's’ subsequent lead was short lived. By the mid- way point in the run, New Zealander Mike Wagstaff had passed Lewis and was on his way to the Ironman title. He finished with a time of 10 hours, 41 minutes and 51 seconds. Before he finished Lewis was also passed by Ron Adl- ington of Banff who finished the course 12 and a half minutes ahead of the North Van athiete. Ron Zalko, one of the organizers of the event, said weather conditions made the event slower than it should have been.
