This child, who appears onstage alongside = in- ternational celebrities and seasoned perfomrers, is the true “star” of the show. because Variety Club's one and only reason for staging Telethon is to raise funds for children in B.C. who need special care and attention. Seven-year-old Tammy Corness of Surrey. B.C. has been chosen to represent needy children throughout South-Western B.C and Vancouver Island, and she will be joined on Telethon by four other children from vanious parts of BC Byron Redhead, an energetic 5- year-old from Fort St. John. cute as-a- button young Lorne trom Prince Goerge. Wesley Penner, a wide-cyed youngster from Kamloops, and Jame Johnston, a dehghtful young lady from Castlegar will yon) Tammy during the 1983 Eelethon to remind ous all there are thousands of young people tn BC who need equipment and facilities that funds raised on provide. Tammy is a blonde, blue- eyed student at T.E. Scott Elementary School in Surrey. When she was 8 months old her parents became concerned at her inability to sit up, and at 18 months she was diagnosed as having Cerebral Palsy. The doctors still don’t know why she was stricken. Although Tammy sometimes. gets frustrated at not being able ro run or nde a bike like her fmnends, she understands that fs she does her exercises every day and tries very hard, one day she just might out-distance them all. Once a week she does physiotherapy at the Variety Treatment Centre in Surrey — swimming in the warm pool to loosen her muscles — and exercising with her therapists. Tammy also does exercises every day at home with the help of her parents, Leigh and Henry. and younger brother, Trevor.
