ESTIMATE eferendum will decide = WV repaving A REFERENDUM asking West Van- couverites whether they are willing to pay $5 million for new roads will be held June 12, council decided Monday. By NANCY WEATHERLEY The three-year repaving program will replace 15 miles of roads all over West Van, which is about 10 per cent of the total. Alderman John Hum- phries said the roadway is badly in need of a mayor overhaul and renewal as roads are “falling apart” in places. Many years of only minor, surface repairs, and lack of funds “to build roads of a quality to stand modern day traffic” were blamed in a statement by Mayor Derrick Humphreys. Although the repaving is expected to take about three years, taxpayers will still be paying for it in 10 years. In spite of the poor economy, the mayor said work should begin in August 1982. But Alderman Dave Finlay suggested the economy might improve next year, making govern- ment grants more available. He said it wasn't necessary to Start work this year. The work would include curbs, guttering and drainage in areas’ where there is none “and the roads fritter away through shoulder wear and _ frost action ” said the mayor. He reminded the meeting that the program will create jobs and stated that once the repaving has been done the normal municipal budget should be enough for ongoing maintenance of roads. $4 qq $412” 14° S] 4 °° near Taylor Way.
