B2 - Sunday News, August 30, 1981 ¢ SEEM sport he script changed ‘It was horrible’ It was horrible. “None of us | expected it to end this way. But of course, , that's the trouble with this game. Somebody always has to be on the losing side and regretably we fulfilled that role. ‘There’s really not much that can be said at this stage except that everyone out on the field gave more than 100 percent. One thing | have to say though, is that I think John and I did the right thing in keeping me on the bench most of the night. After all, I had not played ina number of games, and it could easily have been disasterous to have put me in trying to create that special biend that seemed to be coming along so well. We did what we thought the best thing possible and it didn't work out. One of the hardest thing for a player following the last game, especially when it comes unexpected, is the cold shock of wondering what to do. From March on the lads go to practice every day, much the same way eveyone else goes off to work. Suddenly it ends. What do you do the next morning. There’s no more practice, no more games. It takes quite an adjustment. While trying not to complain too much, I do think the league should change their policy of having the top ranked teams fly across the country for that all important first game, with Peter Lorimer P| then fly back while the poorer team that often just made it to the playoffs has first pame home advantage, then orly has to travel one way. Take a good look at what's been happening in the playoffs to date and you'll see what I mean. However, anything I say can be construed as making excuses and I don't want that. Over all it’s been a good year. We came _ together many of us for the first time, over in Ireland, and we built what could easily become an impressive and strong team. The season record of 21- 11 was very good over all and is the base for the future. ; Many of us will be heading for Europe and the mid-East in October to take on anyone over there, so you can rest assured that this team will continue to grow. Try and remember that no one feels worse about that loss than the players. In fact many were almost in a state of shock after the game. While it’s easy to say it was a termble way to end a season, we should all try and be a bit more charitable and say the season was a good beginning to what will become one of the strongest teams in this league for some time to come. See you soon. Just a last word to throw in from our hardworking Supporter’s Club.
