‘ i CAMPUS PAPERS ARE FORUM FOR FREE THOUGHT Dear Editor: Doug Collins’ recent article on campus newspapers ex- presses a singularly narrow- minded opinion. A campus paper is not a vehicle for. ex- pressing to society the many virtues of the university and its community; instead, it is a forum for the expression of free thought and critique. While 1 may disagree with everything they print, I uphold their right to print it. Yes, few Students concern themselves with gay rights or socialism because the competitive world that we find ourselves in has focused our priorities on indi- vidual’ concerns. If a community newspaper is to serve as an uncontroversial, complimentary mirror of the community, then indeed, the Ubyssey and similar campus papers have failed in this man- date; often it does not express the views of the majority. However, the views of Doug Collins express a prehistoric, “real men don’t eat quiche’, “nuke the bastards’? mentality that itself is a minority view- point.
