THE Carson Graham Eagles took both
ends of the 14th annual Buchanan Bowl
tourney on Saturday at Kinsman
Stadium.

The Eagles hammered the Handsworth Rovals
+7-0 to take the senior division matchup, while the
Carson juniors staged a thrilling fourth-quarter
comeback to defeat the junior Royals 22-19.

The senior Eagles now stand at 3-0 in regular sea-
son action, while their younger counterparts are rid-
ing a 5-0 league record.

With the foss, the senior Handsworth squad is
officially eliminated from playoff contention.

The junior and senior postseason road for the
Eagles is just beginning, however. Both
are destined for playoff action.

The senior Carson squad takes to the
home field this Friday against Windsor
for the league title, while the juniors —
who have already clinched first in the
playotts — take on Nanaimo’s John
Barsby this afternoon or tomorrow.
The junior Royals opened up the
Buchanan Bowl scoring with a pair of
long passing plays to end the first quar-
ter at 12-0. Carson scored in the second
to make it 12-6 at the half.

The third quarter passed scoreless, but the Royals
jumped to a 19-6 lead with a long scoring drive in
the fourth.

The Eagles responded with a 60-yard drive for the
endzone set up by long pass from quarterback Jason
Marshall to wide receiver Mike Henderson.

With another drive and the lead in hand, the
Eagles secured the victory when Henderson inter-
cepted the ball on the last ‘play of the game.

It caps the third consecutive Buchanan Bow! win
for the Carson juniors.

Every year since 1968 the Eagles have battled the
Royals in what has become an eagerly-anticipated
North Shore autumn football showdown.

The event is named in honour of current Carson
senior head coach John Buchanan’s father James,
who taught at both schools during his career and
passed away in 1986.

“It was a really exciting game,” said junior team
head coach Larry” Donohoe. “It was very intense.”

Donohoe singled out the solid play of Marshall as
a key factor in the victory.

“He had a very tough game and he was battered,”
said Donohoe, “but he worked hard and got it done.
(The Royals) area good football team. A very good

football team.”

In the senior matchup, Carson ended a two-year
Royals’ reign in the event with a 47-0 trouncing.

“We are not football smart this year,” said Royals’
coach Joe Bell; “They wore us down. They're very
quick and they hit hard.”
