NSWC $3 MILLION IN DEBT Members cons selling VOTING MEMBERS of the North der Winter Club Shore Winter Club agreed to consider selling the club and leasing it back in an effort to reduce its $3 million debt. General manager Bernie Asbell said more than 100 members of the Private, recreational facility sored “overwhelmingly’’ in favor of at- templing to negotiate with possible financiers. The vote was uaken at the annual general meeting last Thursday. The club has 720 registered voters and a full metmbership in excess of 1,100. “We would only consider selling it if it's in the best interests of the club,” said Asbell. “We do not wish to sell the club if our members can’t continue to use it.’ PURCHASERS APPROACHED He said formal negotiations have not begun, but the club has communicated with the District of North Vancouver, the North Shore ~ Stee RGSS ws Reporter Credit Union, and some. private members who may consider pur- chasing the property. Two other options were consid- ered by the membership it its an- nual general meeting and accepted in principal, said Asbell. Cine was for members to pay $2,500 directly to ‘ie club, which would completely reduce the club's debts and the second option would be for members to contribute $995, which would guarantee the facili- ties not be sold. “Over 40 per cent indicated a suong preference to votuntarily contribute,”’ said Asbell. “But not everyone wishes to put in a substantial amount of money and not everyone can afford to."' He said the board of directors will meet this week to develop a Samaster pln’ and he believes formal negouations will begin in the near future. “The whole move at present is to make a much more. stable organization. In the early 80s there was a huge interest rate that crippled the club significantiy. Honefully we'll be able to negoti- ate our way out of that,” he said. “A sound financial picture would allow us to build a greater membership.”’ Asbel! said financial difficulty was one of the reasons the club fost more than 200 members over the past two years. He also blamed competition fron smaller fitness clubs, and members moving from the province to find employment elsewhere. He said dues would not be in- creased, because the club does not wish to jeopardize its present membership.
