Prices on some items have actually dropped (Assorted Sashimi that was $13.50 is now $12.95). Diners can choose from such menu headings as: Donburi — subtitled “Several layers on big bow! of rice” — ($6.50 for such dons as pork cutlet, beef cooked with vegetables and “chicken; tastily cooked with vegetable”); Tempura ($4 to $9, Prawn; Vegetable; Assorted: Tuna and Salmon); Teppan (Grilled Japanese specialties for red meat fans, $9 to $13, for New York Cur; Sliced Beef; and Beef Short Ribs Teriyaki); Hot Pot and Noodles ($6 to $10 for such big bow! items as Sukiyaki and a host of Udons and Yakisobas). As would be expected, sushi and sashimi abound — from Maki to Temaki and Assorted Sashimi to Cuttlefish Irozukuri. Price range goes from just over SI for single pieces on up to $16.50 for Manyo’s special Sashimi dinner. There are also Japanese box and boat special dinners that offer diners interesting combinations of all of the above, aboard a single plate; and dinner specials that include appetizer, soup, sunomono salad, tempura, rice and a serving of fresh fruit for dessert along with the main dinner item. They make for good din- ing deals. The new Manye aiso offers an All You Can Eat Dinner Special Manye Buffet es NEWS photo Cindy Goodman SHOWCASING SASHIMI ... But it is not a moveable feast, diners. A buffet warning advises professional All You Can Eatists “We recommend that you do not over-order tor leftover take-out is not per- mitted.” Though it is doubeless designed to short-circuit the unscrupulous minority seck- ing to stretch the All You Can Ear offer over the rest of the week, the warning also communicated a subtle distrust of reputable patrons. Traditional Japanese music. OK, this is a quibble. Many diners might not like the stuff anvway, but it adds a note or nwo of authenticity to the proceedings. In its place we gor another dose of lamentable late 20th century pop and rock radio as an aural backdrop to our sushi and an overhead TV tuned to the Golf Channel. Fos unately, Manyvo’s food remams good quality. Tac sampled Sashimi Dinner kicked off with plates of Japanese appetizers (gyvoza -— small dumplings stulfed with pan-fried pork and vegetables — and a block of deep fried tofu) and tempura (eggplant, carrot and prawn) and continued through sunomono (a so-so rendition of the traditional Japanese noodle salad) and Asari Miso soup (fresh clams a Hot Bean Paste: added to the basic burt always stimulating Japanese consomme) before arriving at the main dish. The sashimi itself arrived on a small plate with mini- mal shredded white radish decoration. It included tuna, geoduck, salmon, octopus, snapper and a central por- tion of bright orange flying fish roe. Wasabi (Japan's sinus- clearing green horse radish) was on the plate, but missing was the traditional slices of deep pink pickled Japanese ginger root. Slices of fresh orange and a wedge of honeydew melon rounded out the dinner. Overall it was a good and varied meal Service was very fast, but void of character. Manyo remains.
