34 - Sunday, April 9, 1995 ~ North Shore News . lew THE DISTRICT OF West Vancouver is light- ing its way to a brighter energy future. With the help of B.C, Hydro’s Power Smart pra- gram the district has converted its 301 streetlights from mercury vapor to energy-efficient high-pressure sodi- um lamps. The project saves 156,640 kilowatt-hours of clec- tricity ‘a year, enough to meet the annual needs of almost 16 homes, West Vancouver saves more than $9,000 a year in electricity costs, Glen Clark, minister of employment and investment and the minister responsible for Hydro, congratulated West Vancouver for its commitment to energy-effi- ciency. “The municipality is showing leadership in wise use of resources,” Clark said. “This project is a good example of how local governments, Hydro and the " province can work together to reduce costs and elec- tricity consumption. “The benefits are savings of both energy and tax: payer dollars, not just today, but for years to come.” Power Smart representative Doug Fraser said the West Vancouver project typifies the Power Smart ethic. lights save small steps, not in one single bound,” he said, “In this case, by saving a little bit of electricity in each strect- light, West Vancouver is helping us extend our energy resources. It means we can delay the need for addi- tional generating stations.” Gord MacKay, senior engineer for West Vancouver, said the benefits of the conversion project included immediate savings of both clectricity and taxpayer dollars and the promise of lower costs in the years ahead, “The replacement project will mean ongoing sav- ings in maintenance,” he explained. Maintenance and electricity savings are expected to cover the cost of the conversion within a few years. The West Vancouver streetlight conversion project was completed under Power Smart’s roadway lighting program, Launched in March, 1990, the program aims to convert an estimated 116,000 inefficient streetlights across the province. To date, it has converted more than 100,000 of those lights, about 86% of the target, and saved 64 mil- lion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, enough to meet the yearly needs of 6,400 homes. Power Smart is Hydro’s initiative to motivate cus- tomers to be more energy-efficient. “Significant cnergy savings are gained in several Winter club school proposed _A PROPOSAL to establish an ‘alternative school in an unused portion of the North “Shore Winter Club (NSWC) will. get a public hearing in Apr _ NORTH VANCOUVER “DISTRICT GOUNGCIL ' By Martin Millerchip - -. Mulgrave School. is co-educational, non- denominational and has no particu- lar philosuphy such as the Waldorf OF. Montessori schools. ' ; “It presently teaches grades one * ‘ and two in a portable classroom on the grounds of West Vancouver Unitarian Church, A public information meeting ‘held by the school last January resulted in over 100 ‘deposits for its: director’ family enrolment, with commit- ment divided fairly evenly between North and West Vancouver parents. The move to the NSWC would allow the school to expand its teaching program from kinder- garten to Grade 4 in September 1995, That would result in an initial school population of 75-85 chil- dren which is expected to expand by 15 children a year over a three- to-four-year period. However, the school is search- ing for a permanent site on the North Shore where it can offer grades K-12 and hopes to vacate the NSWC in two or three years.
