nificantly increase the number
of career preparation programs
available to district secondary
school students,

During the upcoming school
year, 44 career preparation pro-
grams will be offered to 768 grade
11 and 12 students.

This represents an increase over

last year when 452 students took
part in 25 programs.
Four district high schools
received most of the new programs:

Although all courses at Argyle
are new, pilot or prerequisite cours-
es offered last year led to the cre-

are people falling between the
cracks. We worry that Closer To
Home (the plan for decentraliza-
tion) implemented too quickly
without all the necessary services
in place will (urn into a nigittmare

she said.

Nurse Patricia Wejr joined the
planning committee as a communi-
ty representative after reading an
ad in the North Shore News, She
said that when she worked in
England she saw many people “slip
through the net” when large mental
health hospitals were closed down
without adequate community care.

As a member of the planning
committee she sat trough “a series
of meetings that turned out to be
fairly tedious” before finding more
rewarding work in the community
involvement subcommittee. Wejr
said she has already found some
direct results in the New Directions
process by working on a proposed
women’s health centre.

Lord said New Directions will
make changes in local control and
community participation so the sys-
tem can work better.. “These
changes are necessary if we are
going to preserve our system.”

She said B.C. now has 7,800
doctors and their numbers are
increasing at double the rate of the
population. Although Canada
spends far more per capita on
healthcare than other advanced

‘countries, the health outcomes are

no better.

Said Lord, “And yet for ail
those dollars the province spends
we still have remarkable inequities
in the health status.

“People in poverty are much
more likely to develop a whole
range of health problems,” she
added.
