WHILE THE provincial gov- ernment examines options to improve the efficiency of mov- ing cars in the Lions Gate cor- ridor, one North Share resident is getting a lot of attention for his proposal to improve the efficiency of moving people. By Kevin Gillies Contributing Writer West Vancouver resident Ken Higys believes increasing the capacity of cars currently being handled by Lions Gate Bridge would only add to current problems of traffic congestion and pollution. He suggests building a seabus terminal 500 fect east of the exist- ing bridge. His wants to dredge a small bay near Calamity Point to house a seabus terminal and exchange loop for buses. ; Buses, he says, would approach from the west end of Welch Street and Capilano Road. A new access road might run south from the west end of Welch. A minimum of Indian Land would be needed, according to Higgs. The Lions Gate Bridge could then be renovated to three wider lanes, two wider walkways and it would retain its old profile. Leaving the corridor with three lanes instead of four, five or six~ would discourage commuters from driving. Higgs argues that using a [erry system in Burrard Inlet would cut air pollution und tffic congestion by making transit t appealing to commuters. The idea could even be expand ed to running ferrics from the north end of the Second Narrows Bridge.
