was ' ary mt ft Mai ALLE North Shore footing the bill Open Ietter to the mayor ‘and council of the District of North Vancouver: Much has bcen said of the re- _ cent water ban and its causes, but the most insulting remarks that have been made against the tax- payers of the District of North: ancouver were by a GVRD of- ficial who said that the public has responded well to the call for lower water consumption. This taxpayer, and 1 know of many more, has not. responded negatively to the watering ban, because the public knows it would make little difference if they did respond. But as a taxpayer, 1 would be derelict in my duty if [ remained sitent to such remarks. Surely, everyone is aware that the Lower Mainiand has been growing by leaps in the last few years, and the primary supptiers of this growth are the Capilano and Seymour dams. Has it not occurred to the GVRD that the consumption of water in the Lower Mainland is so great that it is the main cause of the water shortage? . In addition to the water short- age, consider our hydro bills. We. the taxpayers of the District and City of North Vancouver and the District of West Vancouver, are subsidizing the regional transit levy without any benefit to the North Shore. Surely it is the business of Sur- rey, et.al. to grow as they wish, but why do we taxpayers subsidize them in water and metro trans- portation? . { suggest that the Council of the District of North Vancouver pull out from the membership of the GVRD so that the District of North Vancouver has full control over its main water supply, its wa- tershed logging, and the matter of metro transportation, Peter S.
