Located in the centre of the municipalilty at 2907 Rosebery Ave. in the Altamont area, the parcel is known as Tower Hill and has already been the subject of considerable council debate con- cerning the future siting of the homes and their proximity to creek beds. But nearby residents Patricia Lepp and Debbie Walker have now raised a different issue with their observation of the numerous kinds of wildlife they say frequent this ‘island’? of undeveloped iand that somehow remained barely touched over the past decades while houses sprung up all around it. There have only been two owners of the land, which has served as a “family farm,*’ ac- cording to Lepp. Reeling off a list of animals, including different kinds of falcons, eagles, owls and other birds, which she has noticed on the property, Lepp claimed that the loss of this habitat for wildlife would erode the quality of life area residents enjoy, “Birds aie our early warning system.,.so many species are going extinct....The greatest threat to them is loss of habitat,”’ she said. Lepp asked council to act quickly and invest in the furure by securing the property for 60 days with the $75,000 deposit. But Ald. Pat Boname said that council could ne? deal with such a major expenditure with such short notice; Ald. Andy Danyliu added that the $75,000 would have to be taken out of some other area of the municipality’s budget. But Mayor Mark Sager noted that TIES’s largest acquisition undertaking has cost about $3 million. “And the time frame in this case is extremely short,’’ he said.
