Shore girls’ softball nab bronze TWO TEAMS from the North Shore Girls’ Softball League won bronze medals at the recent provincial ave group championshigns. Playing in the squirt division for 11 and 12-year-olds, Tip Top Collision finished third in the I4-team provin- cial championship played in Surrey. Meanwhile, Green Machine finished third in the pee wee division for 13 and 14-year-olds at a provineial tourney held in Campbell River. Sydor gets gold at nationals DEFENDING CHAMPION Alison Sydor of North Vancouver wen three gold medals at the national cycling championships at Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre, Que. Sydor finished the 80-km road race in two hours, 15 minutes, 29 seconds after beating silver medailist Denise Kelly of Toronto and third place Maria Hawkins of Banff in the final spzint. She also fed the winning team on the team time trial and won the criterium. Sydor has been selected to head the Canadian womer’s team travelling tc the World Roadracing Championship in Stuttgart, Germany next month. Local woman named to cycling team SHARON KEOGH has been named to the Canadian cycling team which will compete ai the Pan Am Games in Havana, Cuba next menth. The North Vancouver cyctist joins a six-member team of road racers who will represent Canada at the Games in mid-August. Canada has won seven cycling medals in recent Pan Am Games. Unfostunately, tae Pan Am Games overlap the World Champioaships in Stuttgart, Germany, so the Canadian Team has been split up, leaving openings for less experi- enced racers while some veterans head to the Werlds. N. Shore team shoots to top piace THE UNDER-IS North Store Shooting Stars girls soccer team won the recent Central Okanagan Youth All-Star Soccer Tournament without tosing a game. Playing up one year in the under-14 age category, the Shooting Stars beat the Interier’s under-14 ‘tA and “*B’* Provincial Cup representatives. The Kamloops under-14 team lost the Provincial A ti- ile 2-1 to Central Fraser Valley the following weehend and the Kelowna under-14 {eam woo the Provincial B ti- tle by defeating the Dunbar Hurricares 4-1 the same | weekend. A longtime resident of the North Shore, English-born Ctifford did his first marathon at the age of 69. During his marathon career, he posted a Cana- dian record — and a personal best — of four hours and one minute in the 75 years and over age category. In 1986, Clifford broke the world record for 80-year-old marathoners with a time of four hours, 19 minutes.
