MAILBOox Orchids to grads, onions to RCMP Dear Editor: i'm a great believer in giving credit where credit is due. And that goes to all the Argyle gradu- ates who attended a party our daughter had in our home after their *‘after grad dance.”” The party lasted from 2 to 7 a.m. There were no fights, no obscene language and the music wasn’t that loud, considering, but there’s bound to be noise with so many happy teenagers. They were not allowed to smoke in the house, only outside. Twelve years is a lot to cele- brate, as it ends a big phase in their lives. Unfortunately, a few adults forgot they were young once and probably graduated and celebrated also. So, the District of North Vancouver RCMP detach- ment were sent out. The first time my husband and I were called to the door, we told the RCMP we would be home all night and also had two bouncers in case some undesirable guests dropped by. As it ended up, everyone, including a few from Sutherland and East Vancouver, were all more than welcome. The only real intruder was Con- stable Drouin who, on his second and last visit, entered our home uninvited, came up the stairs — not knowing my husband and I would be sitting in the kitchen — found us and recited the Criminal Code of Canada to us, then pro- ceeded to tell me how incon- siderate [| was to the neighbors who had to vo to work in the morning. My reply was that [I was sorry but I felt they were being incon- siderate to this graduation class. The grads have earned this night of celebrating for completing their years in schoo! and honoring their parents with such intelligence and success as students and honorable citizens. He had no reply but became defensive after getting his picture taken by one of our guests. Con- stable Drouin spoke angrily to the young man, which, to us, was in- timidation and harassment. The RCMP parked two cars at the end of the driveway and warned us they would arrest any- cne leaving. When I asked, “What if they want to go home?"’ they sat there with egg on their faces and said it would be okay. We had to ask the RCMP to move their cars so a few grads could be picked up by their desig- nated drivers. They moved down the property and sat there until the end of their shift. Many grads came back that day to clean up any mess on the street, in the yard and house. What more could one ask for? Argyle had niany top scholarship winners, but we truly believe this year’s grad class were all winners. So, orchids to you, grads of 1990. You've done your parents proud. Onions to you, Constable Drouin and partner. You picked the wrong time and the wrong teenagers to harass and intimidate. My point and question is: Did this really call for two patrol cars when there are houses being bur- glarized and cars speeding on the highway? Do we have an over- abundance of RCMP officers who have nothing better to do?
