Doctors vent anger during walk-out

“It was productive in the sense
that we got all the infor-nation’’
from the B.C. Medical Association
(BCMA), Dr. Don Hay said. **But
the government didn’t show up to
any extent. Nobody with any
knowledge showed up.”

included 215 docters from North
and West Vancou -er, who closed
their offices to meet at Centennial
Theatre to listen to and question
NDP health critic Dr. Tom Perry,
North Vancouver-Capilano MLA

Angus Ree and BCMA tepre-
sentatives.

Other Social Credit MLA’s in-
vited to the meeting, including
Minister of Health John Jansen
and) Minister of Finance Mel
Couvelier, did not attend.

At the theatre, an audience of
white-coated doctors heard Dr.
Tony Chan, a general and vascular
surgeon at Lions Gate Hospital,
describe the radical decline in qual-
ity of health care he'd seen in the
19 years he’s been practising in
B.C.

Chan showed slides of his 92-

year-old patient Doris Cartwright
to illustrate how health care cuts
could affeet the aging North Shore
population.

Although it was deemed a non-
essential operation, Chan = gave
Cartwright a pacemaker and now
the elderly patient is back garden-
ing and completely self-sufficient.

“We're being criticized for
over-servicing. | ask the  politi-
cians, ‘Who should we turn
away?,’’? Chan said.

He also described how such fi-
nancial stresses as bed shortages,
new procedures, rising overhead,

Many doctors agreed after the
meeting that Chan’s comments
were “right on’? in describing the
doctors’ situation.

Meanwhile at 21st and Lonsdale,
a dozen rotating doctors, some in
army fatigues, staffed the ‘4077
MASH" unit to treat patients with
minor illnesses.
