LGH starts new breastfeeding program THE MATERNITY ward at Lions Gate Hospital has in- creased the range of services it offers with the inz.uguration of its breastfeeding program for expectant mothers. The one-session program discusses the advantages of breastfeeding infants along with the importance of factors such as diet and family support and prepares the expectant mother for what to expect in the first few hours and days after birth. “*We’ve based the content of our program on the pre-natal classes offered by the North Shore Health Department, but it is not a replacement for the pre-natal classes,’ says murse Rosemary Tindale, who conducts the breastfeeding program. ‘‘The small group size enables us to provide personal attention and individual counselling.’’ Tindale emphasized that the ses- sions are not lectures but informal learning and discussion groups. The LGH program provides ex- pectant women with additional in- formation and support as well as establishing a continuity with the hospital ward where they will give birth and receive their post-natal care. LGH breastfeeding program sessions are held once 2 month on 3 West Maternity.
