wood
floors

SINCE ANCIENT times, wood
has provided fuel, tools, and
shelter. It has also provided hard-
wood floors, which in some cases
have lasted for hundreds of
years.

Other floor coverings can’t
compete with the durability, beau-
ty and character of wood, but if
you want your hardwood floors to
retain their sensational sheen, it’s
important to care for them proper-
ly.

Here are some basic care and
cleaning tips to make your floor
care easier.

There are a multitude of finishes
available for hardwood floors to-
day. Two popular finishes are a
factory prefinished baked-in stain
and wax finish, and an ultra-violet
cured polyurethane finish.

Wax finishes should be swept or
vacuumed regularly to remove sur-
face dust before the soil gets walk-
ed into-the finish.

To keep the wood grains glow-
ing, it’s best to rewax floors only
once or twice a year, depending on
traffic. Between waxings, buffing
with a heavy weight circular buffer
will enliven the luster.

Polyurethane finishes require no
waxing. To maintain, simply sweep
