May Day in West Vancouver began in the morning with a Icng distance relay, won by Pauline Johnson in a time of 25 minutes and 20 and 2/5 seconds, followed by Hollyburn and the High School. Lest there be astonishment that the elementary kids beat the High School kids, we can be sure that the High Scliool team was handicapped, either in time or in distance. In the afternoon, there was a parade along Marine Drive to Ambleside Park. Leading off there was the band from General Gor- don School (how many remember that General Gordon died in 1884 in the unsuccessful atternpt to evacuate British Troops from Khartoum, Egypt?), there being no West Vancouver School Band until 1931. After ‘‘O Canada,’’ Reeve Joe Leyland gave a speech in which he promised that this would become an annual affair, a promise which was made good through the years until 1974 when May Day gave way to Community Day. There had been a committee of three to judge costumes; Dr. E.A Henry, Mrs. F. Ealock, and Mrs. " W.B. Small — the latter was to continue with May Day through the years. Mavis Whipple (Rose) and Diana Chapman (Daisy) received special mention, from which we WV_SENIORS CENTRE Varied activities offered THERE ARE still plenty of activi- ties remaining on the busy summer schedule planned by the West Vancouver Seniors Activity Cen- tre.
