8 - Sunday, November 2, [986 - North Shore News Can't see ree tee any need for change in WV Dear Editor: I read from your paper that Mr. Lanskail of the forest industries fame is aspiring to become mayor of West Vancouver. 1 must agree that he concluded deals that were good for large forest companies and a large union. But not good for small and independent operators. Makes one wonder if not, as mayor, he won't be an equally good spokesman for large developers. As for the time of change slogan,-he is flying. This writer can't see any need for it. Mayor Humphreys is doing a good job. We are provided with excellent police and fire protection. Our garbage is picked up regularly. Streets and sewers are taken care of and at the same time our taxes are kept low. Change for just the sake of change brought the KGB to the Russians and Adolph Hitler to Germany. Mr. Lanskail also mentioned ongoing negotiations with the local tribal council. | doubt he can achieve more than Mayor Humphreys. It would be naive to believe this matter can be settled just on the local level. Lam quite sure Mayor Humphreys has spoken with federal officials and is proceeding accordingly. Ten years is a long time for anybody to be absent from municipal affairs — even for Mr. Lanskail. A. Aleksejev West Vancouver (EDITOR'S NOTE: Mr. Lanskail has not been absent from municipal affairs for 10 years. He retired, undefeated, in 1982 after 20 years as an alderman on West Van council.) Students lose in NV Dear Editor: Tne North Shore school system has experienced an increase in task for them and their executive wants to meet with the school board to discuss the class size issue. But prior to such discus- exert pressure on trustees is sad reflection on professional teachers. This type of threat will not ad- vance the teacher position for lower class sizes and only serves to pupii-teacher ratio from 16.69:1 in 1981 to 17.50:1 in 1986 according to data provided at the last school board meeting. Average actual class sizes are now around 25:1 for elementary classes and 27:1 -in secondary | classes. Teachers will also decide at an October meeting whether sufficient progress has been made on class size concerns and they may then ‘tundertake a full instruction only campaign.” This tactic of work-to-rule (in- struction only) by using students to Service 980-8501 create unnecessary tensions in the school system and in the com- munity. In my opinion, this is the wrong action at the wrong time and it is directed at the wrong people — our students. Don, alone, is to be thanked for the seawalk, and for the regional park protecting the Capilano River. In addition, his support resuized, before the present mayor's ‘erm, in such policies as acquiring Ambleside Waterfront properties, partial melding of the Blue Bus system with a regional system to free up the bus depot site, limiting development above the Upper Level, a rigorous creek protection policy, and planning and arranging the financing of the Seniors Activity Centre. Change is always resisted in municipal politics. The easy politi- cal stance is to do nothing. Talk, pomp and ceremonial chains do little harm in the short run but are deadly in the long run, Don Lanskail has the courage to propose good plans, the wisdom to listen to criticism and to modify plans and the ability to make them happen, ‘ I 2m now a North Vancouverite but my interest in the whole North Shore is as strong as ever and I recommend Don Lanskail to the voters of West Vancouver.
