Preventative maintenance tips

Moulds and mildews are parisitic
fungii and they flourish in damp,
warm areas where ventilation is poor
or non-existent. If allowed to
develop and spread, they can be very
difficult to get rid of. St is easier to
prevent their inception than it is to
erase it.

Minimize dampness with good
ventilation, If possible, leave win-
dows and portholes open, when Ieav-
ing the boat. If this presents a securi-
ty risk, or if your boat is kept out-
side, heating rods that plug into any
a.c. outlet should be left on during
your absence. Another method is
through the use of heating cables,
much like the cables used to keep car
engines warm overnight in cold
climates.

isting spores, while preventing new

Mould and mildew flourish on
damp, dirty surfaces. Make sure that
no dirty or wet clothes have been left
on board. If mildew does develop,
wash with a half and half mixture of
rubbing alcohol and water and then
let dry thoroughly. If rubbing
alcohol is unavailable warm soapy
water can be used, although it is less
effective, and harder to dry.

it is difficult to maintain. Wood
finishes require a great deal of time
and expense to preserve the natural
luster, as water and weather wreak
havoc on the wood grains.

maintenance ‘required.

Before fiberglassing wood sur-
faces, they must be sanded and
scraped for proper bonding.

There are generally three dif ferent
lengths for docking lines on pleasure
boats and more often than not they
are all kept together in one snaking
mass on deck. To avoid the confu-

> sion of grabbing the wrong length re-
quired while docking, mark each
rope on both ends with a different
colour of tape, each colour
designating a length.

Make all docking lines with an eye
splice in the end at least 24 inches in
diameter. This ensures that it fits
over any cleat or pole on any dock.

Always tie the boat to the dock, .

never tie the dock to the boat. Make
sure the free end of each line is
secured to a cleat on the boat, not
to something on the dock.
