The North Shore schools participating were Argyle, Handsworth, Hillside. Sen- tinel, Seycove, St. luomas Aquinas, West Vancouver, and Windsor. The Enrichment Workshop has been designed to provide an opportunity for highly motivated math and science students to become actively involved in some of the more interesting techniques and advances in science, A variety of laboratory projects in biology, chemis- try. math/computing science, and physics were run in the College's new science and computing facil- Music ities, With intensive instruc- tion from the Capilano faculty. Among the topics covered in the workshops were ex- traction of DNA from salm- on sperm: organic synthesis of the sun-sereen agent PABA (Para-Aminobenzoic Acid) followed by in- strumental analysis of the project; experimenting on the chelating properties of aspirin; using the micro- computer to introduce some interesting and unusual mathematical problems; us- ing laser light and an oscilloscope to explore the interference of light and sound waves. This is the fifth year that Enrichment workshops have been offered by the Natural Sciences Division, and once again the faculty expressed their extreme pleasure with the attendance, enthusiasm, and quality of the students involved. brings back memories From Page 4 eras we all passed through.
