Say what you will about CSBs, they have a number of excellent features going for them: they are among the most secure of investments, being backed by the govern- ment of Canada, and conse- quently they are an obvious investment choice for the novice or inexperienced in- vestor as well as the cautious professional, they pay a reasonably competitive rate of interest; and they are readily converted or turned into cash if you should need it for any reason. Generally speaking, they are an invest- ment vehicle every investor should consider. Here’s the latest informa- tion emerging from Ottawa about the forthcoming issue — PLUS an explanation of an idea you may wish to use to make a few extra dollars. Early indications are that this issue will pay 11'%% or 112% in the first year As we mentioned in an earlier column, many people have been cashing in ther CSBs this past year (o put the money into higher-paying Treasury Bills. So don’t be surprised if the Ottawa man- darins throw in a curve which will reduce the rate to, perhaps, 10% if you cash itin in the first year $35 Ottawa is expected to an- nounce the actual details this coming Thursday You can invest anywhere from $100 to a maximum ot $50,000 They can, of course, be purchased at the usual financial institutions Aside from probable ef forts by Ottawa to make these CSBs more competitive with other instruments such as T Bills, the usual routine ADVERTISING CORRECTION Eatdn’s Trans Cansda Sale Suppon Flyer ap. pearing the North hore News, Sunday. However, here’s a small angle you may wish to take advantage of to make a few extra dollars this time. It was drawn to my attention by and Ken John Nichol Bill Ryan ES McLaren, Vancouver ac- count executives with Burns Fry Lid., the national invest- ment house. This firm — hke other brokerage houses — main- tains a special deposit fund for CSB purchases. Money received by November 1 for Plexible Certificates of Deposit designed the purchase of bonds goes into this special fund and cur- rently 11% interest is paid on these funds. However, the settlement date on which the company turns over these funds to Ot- {awa comes several days later. This year it’s expected to be November 7. $$$ Remember, the CSBs begin paying you interest on November |. This gives you the opportunity to collect DOUBLE INTEREST for a week — 11% from the invest- ment house for your money on deposi, plus whatever Ol1- tlawa decides to pay on the bonds. The net result: If you had $50,000 in the fond. the com- pany will send a cheque for about $105. A $10,000 deposit to buy the bonds would get you a cheque for about $10; a $5,000 deposit about $5. In the meantime, your bond goes on earning for you. It’s not big money — but when did you last throw away $5 or $105? For that one week (on an annuahzed basis) you earn more than 13% As an authorized sub agent for Burns Fry | can give you more details and handle your CSB purchase.
