BMX nationals here

BMX IS the latest and fastest
growing sport among the
young people ages 3-20. It
started about 10 years ago
but has only become really
popular in Canada in the last
two vears. BMX tracks are
opening all over the world.
This summer world finals are
being held in Japan with 198$%
finals in Vancouver, B.C.
The North Shore track has
been built by a pgroup of
adults interested in pro-
moting this sport. Through
much persistance they were
able to rent the land at
Lonsdale and Upper Levels
from the Highways Depart-
ment. | ocal contractors were
approached for help in
building the track. Their sup-
port was overwhelming with
contributions of many hours
of machinery, men, 500 truck
loads of fill. The North Shore
Optumist Club gave a dona-
tion to buy necessary equip-
ment such as a P.A. System
for the Opening last August.
To date the track ts valued
at $35,000 with not a cent of
taxpayers money being used.
Races are held every Sunday
with the track being a public
facility the rest of the week.
The 13 week racing season
last year altracted an average
of 90 riders from the North
Shore and lower mainiand.
BMX riding is not an ex-
clusive sport but one that any
mdividual can take part tn.
The only requirements are:
1. A regular BMX Bike
2. A helmet
3. 3 Pads, Crossbar,
gooseneck and frame.
. long sleeves and pants
. A membership in BMAC.
Weekly races are held with
accumulated points being

awarded towards yearly stan-
dings on district, provincial
and national levels. - .

On May 20 the North
Shore track in conjunction
with STP is hosting one ot
the two nauionals awarded to
each province. Over 400
riders and their famuhes from
throughout B.C. and Alberta
are expected to attend. A race
this size as a benefit to local
merchants in’ the area ot
restaurant, hotels, entertain-
ment, and general entertain-
ment. Local hotels are olter-
ing a discount to BM®™ riders.

Playland and the Aquarium
are also offering special
BM® rates tor the May Na-
tonal race

In a small community itis
not unusual to. find the
population and = merchants
supporting an individual
proup’s attempt to. get
started. In a Jarge city where
the people are often criticized
for not caring itis unusual to
find this spin of support.
