i mailbox ~<] Foreign students pampered Dear Editor: The residents of Tiffany Estates in Richmond should not be protesting the con- struction of a private boar- ding school in their neighbourhood to Richmond Municipal council. They should be addressing their concern to the provincial government; more par- ticularly the Ministers of Education and Universities, Science and Communica- tions — Bill Vander Zalm’s replacement and the Hon. Pat McGeer. The proposed university prep school will cater to foreign students, mostly from Hong Kong. They wilf be coming here to get their grade 12 diploma and a “free” education thereafter. While their parents may pay through the nose for the private schooling here, the rest is easy. Anyone who has a B.C. grade 12 diploma qualifies as a university en- trant. And, thereafter, the B.C. taxpayer pays 90 per cent of their education costs. No other country in the world gives foreign students a financial break like this. Other provinces, recently, have raised their fees for “visa” students also. British Columbia should do likewise. And, if it did, we would not have privately promoted prep schools spr- inging up everywhere. Hon. A central ques- tion which must be put to all contenders for office, and especially to the leaders of Parties, is as to their stance on maintaining the Con- stitutional Monarchy, that pillar of Canadian democracy on which rests so much of what is just and de- cent and traditional about our country. Rejecting the Monarchial minimalism of the past decades, which has seen an often subtle erosion in both the substantive powers and symbolic presence of the Crown in Canada, the Monarchist League of Canada has prepared a Manifesto, listing eight reasonable demands which, we believe, Canadian loyalists should make of their public officials with respect to the Monarchy. Hypnotherapist raps NEWS headline Dear Editor: How disappointing it was for me to read your headline in a recent edition: ‘Hyp- notist’ goes to jail. For many years medical practitioners, psychologists and professional hypnother- apists, like myself, have been trying to dispel the myths and misconceptions that still plague hypnosis. Whilst there will always be some individuals who mistakenly believe that it is a form of “mind control” that 20% can enable them to illegally or immorally benefit from it, this kind of sensational headlining does little to help our efforts to re-educate the general public. In addition, the: article didn’t state how hypnosis was relative to the story. This article is misleading and was taking a cheap shot at hypnosis by preying on the lack of proper information. Daniel Rutley North Vancouver Loyalists must act For instance, we want the Canadian Citizenship Act to be amended to remove any doubt that the members of our Royal Family are indeed Canadians; we wish the status of God Save The Queen as Royal Anthem to be enshrined by statute; and ~ we wish to see the proud, in- digenous name ‘Dominion Day’ restored as our national holiday, rejecting the sleepy duplicity by which ‘Canada Day’ was imposed upon us. Readers who might wish to obtain one or more copies of this Manifesto for their own consideration and, hopefully, for passing on to their Provincial and Federal legislators, should write to The Monarchist League of Canada, 2 Wedgewood Cres- cent, Ottawa, Ontario K1B 4B4. We must act now to assure the future of in- stitutions which we have too often tended to take for granted! John L.
