INNER WORKINGS OF HOTELS With the co-operation of representatives from four major hotels (Hotel Van- couver, The Sheraton Landmark, Hyatt Regency and International Plaza) P've been looking into the inner workings of hotels - with special emphasis on guest's safety, convenience and comfort. I have no doubt that Fire is probably the most prevalent fear -- and for a very good reason. Panic can kill and there's nothing quite sO. Scary as a_fire in the middie’ of the night, especially when you're in unfamiliar surroundings. _ luxury hotels have. resear- -~ ! ched these fields. to no end and break their necks trying to accomodate all of their. high-priced guests. Naturally, as the cost per night decreases, some services have to be eliminated. After all, you can’t expect ‘‘Ma’s Bunkhouse” at $18 a night to provide you with gold plated | plumbing and in-house movies. Oh, yeah, I'know all about some of those scruffy little motels that provide in- house (to be delicate) en- tertainment. We won't go into those. There are two things that we all want to protect, wherever we are: our little brown bodies and our personal possessions. In today’s modern hotels, both . can be quite safe as long as we use our heads and take advantage of all the help that the hotel can give us. ‘bara by Ba Actually, you're safer in a hotel than you are in your own bed! Who walks through your house at regular intervals all night ’ facilities, e sure beats bein long to make sure that all is well? Rest assured that the night manager and his security staff are doing that for you in a hotel. With stiff fire codes and regular inspection. of hotel you're probably much better protected than you are at home. If you have any suspicion of fire, give the alarm if you can. Don't go barging out into the halls before feeling your door to see if it’s hot. If the hall is filled with smoke, _ Stay in your room unless you know exactly where the emergency stairs are located. Never use the elevator. Shut the fire doors after you — never prop them open. Protect your nose and mouth with a wet towel and crawl along the floor to the exit. - If the halls are impassible, shut your door and fill your bathtub with water. Use this to soak towels and sheets to jam into the cracks around the door. Get out on your balcony and wave something white to attract attention. NEVER break a window except as a last resort - smoke from outside can billow in. Open windows, too, can create a draft that feeds a fire and draws smoke outside. Most hotel] doors are built to withstand fire for up to three hours. Your chances of being roasted are much less than your chances of * being overcome by smoke. The smart guest checks the location of fire exits and opens them to make sure that they are unlocked and free of debris such as folding chairs, cartons or garbage. Anything wrong should be reported immediately to the management and if they don’t react at top speed, tip your hat and be on your way. Slovenly safety habits indicate that you'd be better off in the Greyhound Station. Women travelling alone are also afraid of haying their room burgled, perhaps more from the fear of rape or murder than for losing a few dollars. Yf you're nervous, a security guard or some other staff member will be happy to escort you to your room at night. Double lock all the doors and put on the chain. No matter who a caller professes to be, ['d check with the desk before I opened my door at night. If the hotel staff is indeed knocking on CHICAGO (UPI) - The discovery of a second Pontius Pilate coin bearing a rare misspelling provides convincing evidence that the Shroud of Turin is the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, a theologian said Monday. Magnifications of the same type of rare coin, believed widely used to cover the eyes of the dead around Palestine until 70 A.D., have showed the same misspelling found in the shroud imprint. The Rev. Francis L. Filas. a professor of theology at Loyola University, said the coin’s imprint on the burial cloth dates the shroud back to the first’ century and proves itis nota forgery. The Pontius Pilate coin covered the right eye of the crucified man’s figure on the kept in shroud, which is Turin, Italy. WAIKIKI Al Only WAIKIKI $419 8 Days, 7 Nights, Alr & Hote! But Filas said Monday he located a second Pontius Pilate coin from a Collection in the rare coin department of Marshall Field & Co. Filas, a long-time researcher on the shroud, stressed that his new discovery is not conclusive in proving that the shroud contains the imprint of the body of the crucified Christ. But he said the evidence is overwhelming. “The primary thing it provided directly is that the . Suzanne Carson, Senior Consultant shroud cannot be a forgery. That a human body put the marks on the cloth. That the shroud marks are from a human body,” Filas said. “The opponents really do not make much of a point of . saying it's the body of anybody else but Jesus Christ. They recognize that if it's a human body, the coincidences would have to lead to Jesus Christ.” ore evidence on shroud The cloth -- 14 feet long and 3% feet wide -- has photographically negative markings of the front and back of a crucified man. He said the Shroud provides a long list of coincidences that fit both Jesus Christ and the man of the Shroud,” including a hasty, rich and individual burial, a scourging and pierced heart. hair & skin §tudio experts in hair fashion, skin care & makeup Gift Certificates AvaBable Free Parking at rear off [3th Strect 1315 Lonsdale Ave. 980-9610 or 980-3551 AVOID LINE-UPS AT THE DOWNTOWN AIRLINE OFFICES — ROSEWAY CAN ISSUE YOUR TICKETS FOR CHRISTMAS TRAVEL! it you have made reservations to travel at Christmas time directly with a major atrine you can pick your tickots up trom our office AIR CANADA (@) BPP western Airlines Gad THE ONLY WAY TOY — Pacific Western CP Air I< Stimpty phone us with the details. and wo will issue your tickets immediately #106 - 100 Park Royal West Vancouver AT NO ADDITIONAL COS! 926-8616 926-4344 sorry C17 - Wednesday, November 25, 1981 - North Shore News passport pln OTos whife you wait NORTH SHORE DARKROOM 1527 Lonsdale 988-9812 legitimate business, they won't be offended if you check. “Safe” is a whole lot better than “Sorry”.
