Some B.C. stores
failing to give consumers a
full refund for soft drink
bottle deposits; Consumer
and Corporate Affairs
Minister Jim Nielsen said last
week.

“It has been brought to my
attention that many retailers
are charging a ten cent
deposit for small (300 ml)
bottles and a 20 cent deposit
for the larger (750 ml)
bottles, but are refunding
only five and ten cents
respectively.”

recently increased the
deposit return on soft drink
bottles to the new level and
major B.C. bottlers have
followed suit, in an effort to
prevent the. outflow of
‘bottles from B.C.

Refunds take eight weeks -

People expecting income
tax refunds this year can
expect to wait eight to ten
weeks for their refund
cheques because of a late
start in processing at
Revenue Canada's four
Taxation Centres.

Computers began proces-
sing tax returns at the end of
January this year rather than
the usual starting time of
mid-January due to delays in
computer programming and
the mailing of personalized
tax returns.

Taxation’s computers
must be  re-programmed
every year to accept new
items of legislation affecting
tax returns. This year the
computers had to be
programmed a second time
when legislation for the
mortgage interest and
property tax credit had not
received approval when
Parliament was dissolved
December 14.

At that time the mailing of
the 15 million personalized
tax returns was also halted to
allow for removal of the
application for the mortgage
interest and property tax
credit (Schedule II). About
six million returns and
schedules had already been
mailed by mid-December
but schedules were removed
from the remaining nine
million tax returns.

Even though some tax
returns do contain. the
schedule and all returns have
a line (64a) referring to the
mortgage interest and
property tax credit, people
should ignore’ these
references to the credit
when filing their tax returns.
The returns of people who
attempt to claim the credit
will be adjusted automati-
cally to reject the claim.

The late start in the pro-
cessing of tax returns will
affect mainly early tax filers
who mail their tax returns
