When Bristol City takes
the’ field against the Van-
couver Whitecaps on
Saturday evening, fans will
be seeing one of the biggest
success stories of the English
first division.

Just last seasgn Bristol
City finished 17th of the 22
teams in the first division.
This was after barely
avoiding relegation the year

- previous.

This season City finished
9th, well established in the
top half of the first division.

Bristol city has been in the
Football Association’ since
1894 and have fielded a
professional side since 1897.

Throughout their long
history the club has bounced
through three divisions.

Bristol City boasts a multi-
national International side
with Terry Cooper, Norman
Hunter and Joe -Royle
holding full caps for England
with Chris Garland as an
under 23 English In-
ternational.

Cooper and Hunter are
defenders while Garland and
Royle are strikers.

Peter Cormack isa full
International for Scotland
while Gerry Gow and Don
Gillies both hold under 23
honors for the Scottish side.

. A definite Scottish flavor
comes out on the club.
Striker - Tom” Ritchie,
Midfielder Gerry Sweeney
and Goalkeeper John Shaw
all come from the far side of
Hadrian’s Wall.

Soccer jamboree heralded as success

North and West Vancouver
boys participated in the first
ever Dairyland Sportmanship
Soccer Jamboree held
recently at Strathcona Park
in Vancouver.

A total of over 250
participants from all over the
lower mainland took part in
the two day event in which
teams were formed randomly
and no team had more than
three or four players from
one club.

The jamboree was design-
ed for boys playing -on
Division 5 under 13 year old
community recreation teams.

The event was billed as
concentrating on the values
of sportsmanship, fellowship
and participation rather than
as ai highly competitive
tournament.

Participants to the jam-
boree had been selected
beforehand on the basis of

their sportsmanship qualities
on and off the field.

The chairman of the B.C.
Youth Soccer Association,
Ken Lind commented that
‘the event was truly a great
experience for all the young
participants.”’

The B.C. Youth Soccer
Association co-hosted and
fully sanctioned the event.
