Dff-leash dog parks

are a kin

WHEN I was asked to
consider doing an arti-
cle on off-leash parks
my response was, “I'd
rather shoot myself in
the foot!”

This is such a sensitive
subject full of opinions that I
thought by adding my own |
would not be making any
new friends.

But since Tam an advo-
cate of responsible dog own-
ership my advice might come
in handy in making the off:
leash dog park work.

Lynnmouth park was
recently granted the dubious
honour of a six-month off:
leash trial period.

This is a great idea since
most dog owners already use
this area to Iet their dogs run
free. We are all very much
aware of the benefits of exer-
cise and socializing (and

canine
connection

training!) for canine health.
But if the off-leash park is to
jast more than six months we
have to work together and
agree to follow a few basic
issues of responsible dog
ownership.

The first one is the health
issue of dog poop.

T have sientioned this
subject in past columns but it
doesn’t seem to be sinking in
(my front lawn is testament
to thar fact). It is imperative
that owners clean up after
their dogs. Don’t be embar-
rassed when your dog does

number two, just pick it up!
Dog poop can carry parasites
and disease which can be
transterred to other dogs. It
is an awful mess to step in,
and it can make a public park
look like a field of fecal land
minds. Ambleside park is a
prime example of excrement
overload. North Vancouver
City has fortunately agreed
to install receptacles and
small garbage bags to make it
casy for you to stoop 0
scoop.

Next is the safety issue of
non-dog owners using the
park but afraid of being run
down by over zealous dogs.

This is a vatid concern,
especially for the elderly, The
use of fencing was suggested
as a way of separating dogs
and people. [agree with
council that fencing is not
esthetically pleasing. More
