TRAWS LINK ® Runway, by Larry Fink, Powerhouse Books, 120 pages, $60 US By Terry Peters Contributing Writer FOR that brief time when the mode! struts down the run- way, all the eyes of the fashion world can be directed at the single creation she wears. Fluttering before the lights of the cameras, she repre- sents the shining moment of the designer’s work, perhaps to end there or maybe ‘to grow and become part of a successful collection. The runway can be the sand of the colise- um where the buyers will decide thumbs up or down. Photographer Larry Fink peels away the covers to let us see inside this pressure cooker. His images show the whole story, the designers, the audience, the media, the huge supporting cast — all playing their parts, focusing on that short promenade. Drawing on his access to shows, recep- tions and parties from October °93 to March °99, he has produced 99 full-page’ black and white photos. Most of the images are from behind the curtains, capturing the backstage world in its chaotic, neurotic glory. Bored models, stressed scamstresses, designers and photographer all collide in the adjoin- ing pages, creating a wonderful feel for this unusual world. . At the end, we are grateful for Fink’s sharp eve that has shown us what few get to see, for Larry Fink sees it all.
