of Dundarave? T hope not!

Seems the developers
are moving west to that
unique village called
Daundarave (the last of the
true small villages in. the
province.) Sorry, J forgot
about Edgemont Village
in the foothills of Grouse
Mountain,

The Edgemont plan-
ning committee did a
|, superb job of keeping the
fraternity of the neighbor-
hood along with the char-
acter of the community in
mind,

Hopefully, that app-
roach will take place tn
_Dundarave in keeping
‘with the English village
theme and not a Park
Royal or Lonsdale look.

Developers often build
those square boxes to max-
imize square footage. ,

Why not show some
“imagination and keep the

funky village ook that’

-1-1 priorities

Dear Editor;

On July 9, T happened to
arrive first on the scene of a
single-car accident. The car
was resting an its toot and
flattened. 1 used my cellular
phone call ol 1 and requested
specifically that 1 be conneet-
ed to the fire department.

I did so because there was
a fre station within three
blocks of the location, ‘The
911 operator questioned the
nature of my emergency and |
stated that a car had over-
turned, a victim was trapped,
and that there was a fire sta-
tion very close by,

I know that the victim had

to be extricated and that's
why [Twas direct in’ my
request. The 911 operator
over-ruled my request. and
connected me to the ambu-
lance servicé,.I again stated
that [ wanted to be trans-
ferred to the fire department
and the operator said that he
would relay the call.

I estimated that I waited
approximately 10 minutes
before I decided to place
another call, The 911 opera-
tor once again denied my
request to speak with the fire
department. Eventually the
fire department and ambu-

five minutes later.

The ambulance attendants
had to wait for the victim to
be extricated before trans-
porting him to hospital,

operators dispatch — motor
vehicle accidents first to B,C.
Ambulance Service and. see-
ond to the fire deparrment.
After witnessing the afore-
mentioned accident | fuel this
call’ priority is in the wrong
order. Yes, motor vehicle acei-
dents usually involve injuries
that require ambulance ser-
vice but it is not uncommon
for motor vehicle accidents to
create dangerous fitel spills
and extrication of victims.

Above all, the most valu-
able lesson I learned is to yell
“Fire!” next time [ have an
emergency, whatever the
nature of my call! 1 can't help
but wonder if perhaps a future
coroner's jury will have’ to
some day make this a recomn-
mendation as more victims
continue to needlessly await
the artival of an ambulance
when a fire station is just min-
utes away,

City ignores petition

‘The 38 signed petitions by residents protesting the changes
to the Official Community Plan, which will permit the building
of a monster apartment by Quayside Go-housing at the 500
block Chesterfield, have been ignored by North Vancouver
City,
