In the daytime, mind, so that all of us old ladies and gertle- men could attend. We're not big on staying up past our bedtime much any more. It was a lovely party, with lots of young people about to take coats and pass the goodies, so that we were all of "s free to mix and mangle, as someone used to say. The party was in the West Vancouver Seniors Centre, and was designed as a combi- nation celebration of the centre’s importance to the community as well as cxpo- sure of the results of the ongoing in-house art classes. Every single person who attends the regular weekly art classes, whether for painting, pottery, glass work, whatever, was invited to exhibit. Elizabeth Smiley is in charge of the instruction and this is her rule. She had a hand in the hanging, too. It was well done, there is mar- vellous space in the centre now, with room for every- thing since the additions were all accomplished. All the various interests are catered to. There’s room for billiards and for quilting as well for green thumbs and wood work and exercising and just sitting around hav- ing tea, observing the scene. The number of paintings contributed was astonishing. They were spread over sever- Some women experience the hor flashes of mehopause atc trying soy products to counter this uncomfortable symptom. The place has come a long way. The centre was just get- ting going in the days of yore when my husband and | lived in West Vancouver. We lived in the pink place above the sea wall, just a block or two from the site chosen for the centre. It was still in its infancy when I began my cooking classes for men, and as I recall we had to make do with very basic equipment and rather awkward space. Speaking of which, they are in the market for some- one who will take on those cooking lessons for men again. J wish I weren’t so doggone old, I'd take it on myself. The kitchens now are truly professional, with all sorts of space and two sets of everything. I don’t mean two tea ket- tles and two sinks, I mean two fully equipped kitchens, built in tandem along the inside walls. That’s so that service can be provided very quickly to patrons seated anywhere in the large bright room, which faces them, but it would also make a teach- ing situation absolutely superb. They serve dinner only occasionally, F was told, on Wednesdays as a rule. That’s an area they are looking to expand, as it would probably appeal to a lot of people. Everyone enjoys someone else’s cooking, and if it means company too thet’s ail the better. They do full funches most of the week. You can always call 541-2231 to find out what’s going on. Membership can be had for the astonishingly low sum of seventeen dollars a year — there are roughly 3,700 on the roster now, it fluctuates a bit, ran up to 4,100 last year. Mayor Don Bell has promised seniors a designated area in the proposed Parkgate Community Centre. They also look forward to establishing a Frail Elderly program soon and a recent addition is a Computer Club, which is drawing a lot of people these days. After all, you have to keep up with your grandchildren. They are presently in the throes of building a web- page, and City Hall is help- ing with that. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing what they have done, and how many people lighten their days with the friendship offered. They opened with a group of members working hard at country-dancing — gosh, I wish I was 60 again. north shore Guaranteed Delivery!
