THE issue is not as much “to pay or not to pay” as it is

“to pay or to pay more.” Taxpayer: already furine! hun-

dreds of dollars into the education kitty. But now Parents

of pubic school children are being asked to chip in more

— for everything from computers to books. A similar sit-

uation arose in Kerrisdale, when parents coughed up

se extra cash for the school’s computer department. And

snquiring why not? If parents are able to help improve the quality

reporter of their children’s education, sa muck the better.

~~ However, such subsidizing creates the probiem of “have”

and “have not” schools, with parents clamoring to enrol their kids in the former.

While private school parents are used to fundraising, and taxpayers without schcol-

aged tykes think parents should be paying more, must people agree government
should be doing more to ensure that public education is equal and accessible to all.
