Accelerated Secondary Apprenticeship Programus (ASAP) Accelerated Secondary Apprenticeship Programs offer any secondary school student an academic and technical education that will allow them an advance placement into an apprenticeship, or entry into post secondary education. The days when an unskilled person could walk onto a construction site or into a factory and get a decent job ace gone. What with technology advancing every day, many occupations require an academic background and some high-tech expertise. On- the-job training is by far the best way to learn the state-of-the-art equipment and technology. North Vancouver Secondary School's Apprenticeship program addresses this issue by offering a workplace- based training for the apprentices. ASAP is a result of the Government's Skills Now Initiative in 1995-96 offering career and post secondary opportunities for our youth who, as a result, will make a laige and positive impact on the growth of our appienticeable occupations and BC's economy. One of the best things about an apprenticeship is that you carn 4 salary while you're learning. In fact, employees in apprenticcable occupations often carn more money than workers with a liberal arts university degree! Apprenticeships generally last between two and five years, depending en the trade. About 90% of the training is given on the job, under the supervision of a qualified journey person. The remainder is yained al a college or institute for one period of four to eight weeks each year of the apprenticeship. An apprentice must pass with 70% or hetter in all of their exams. Students who are interested in a career in any of the 170+ active apprenticeazhle occupations practiced in BC, now have the Opportunity of completing a large portion of the first year of their practical training, while atending school, Students who qualify wii!-be paid for their 480 to 900+ hours at their “training berth” or employer. At the end of Grade 12, the apprentice wil) graduate with their peers in June and then continue with their apprenticeship during the summer months and bevond. Forty new apprenticeable occupations have opened in Film and Motion Pictures, Aerospace, Food and Hospitality Servers.
