Dear Editor: Doug Collins is reaching a Jevel of political hypocrisy unequaled yet in our short, but interesting parliamentary history. While announcing, for the record, that he intends to seck nomination as a cundidate for the provineial Reform party, in an _¢lection that may soon be announced, he continues his active ily as a potidical columnist, >» By doing this he is not only having an unfair advantage over potential candidates from other parties or political groups, but even over people espousing the same political philosophy as Mr. ‘Collins. Mr, Collins is trying to wear two hats atthe same time and using his special statts as a columnist to promote hiraself for his private political ambition. Only Mr. Collins; and only here, can he publish a piece af politic al propaganda, masquerad- ing asan article, dnd then letting “everybody know that he would like to be a candidate “if only Mr. Gamble wants me." Of course [Foam not naive enough to believe that journalists should live by some unattainable moral -standards, above and beyond any political convictions or, why not... ambitions. JAIL over the world journalists have often decided to run for all kinds of political jobs and many have proven to be skilled and effi- cicat representatives of the peo- ple. There are, however, some rules of conduct they have to obey. tn recent memory when the famous American television mad- erator Pat Buchanan announced his decision to run for the Republican Party. he, without delay, deft the two shows he helped create for the CNN net- work, Crossfire and The Capital Gang, giving up millions in income. Because Mr. Collins has already let the cat out of the bag, he should immediately take a leave of absence until the nomina- tion process for the next provin- cial election is completed: ot, if nominated, until the results of the next elections are known. This will create an even field for everyone who would like lo participate in the democratic process of selecting the candidates for every political party, including the Reformers. Then Mr. Collins, the would-be candidate, may vtart doing what other politicians, professionals or amateurs always do, namely buy- ing the space for his political mes- sage and paying for it from his pocket or from funds provided by his supporters. Jack Chivo West Vancouver A tiresome bashing of NDP government Dear Editor: _ When-constituents ask, as they have, for me to respond to your ‘Sunday, Nov. 6, editorial titled “Labor Junacy,” I have to admit that I’m so used to your govern- ment bashing that I take it more like water on a duck’s back than as serious journalism. Nevertheless, your latest tirade contains falsehoods which if unanswered may be mistaken for ‘fact. Contrary to your assertion that B.C. Ferry Corp. refused to sell tickets to drivers for TNL Construction because of unionized MacBlo workers being involved in a dispute, the fact is that members ‘of the building trades picketed the ferry terminal in order to prevent the trucks from entering. The Ferry Corp.’s management response to this disruption is to let the legal process resolve the dis- pute rather than taking action that could lead to even more passenger disruptions and possible civil dis- obedience. That is not an act to condone the disruption, it is an act to let the legal system resolve it. On Friday, Nov. 4. the B.C. Supreme Court banned pickets from the ferry terminals, allowing TNL trucks and equipment access to the ferry system. The North Shore News may choose to put a political spin on the dispute, but the facts do not support your editorial. The dispute in Port Alberni is unfortunate and regressive. Our government had made consider- able progress in the last three years in fostering a harmonious labor relations climate. * Government's authority to intervene in contractual agree- ments between private parties is limited. Hopefully the parties can be assisted to resolve their differ- ences. That process is not helped by inflammatory and misleading editorials. David D. Schreck, MLA (North Vancouver-Lonsdale) _ Bathing suit? So what Dear Editor: Iam writing to, respond to all those readers who are deeply “out- raged” and “angered” by the Sunshine Girl feature. I honestly cannot believe any- one would get so upset by seeing a girl wearing a bathing suit, It really makes me wonder what these “puritans” do at the beach. Do they walk around cov- ered from head to toe with their .eyes closed? Heaven forbid exposing o7 see- ing a glimpse. of bare skint And if they are so “disgusted” by the sight of a human “body. what the heck do they do in the bathtub? Wear a blindfold so as to not get offended or disturbed? There are people out there killing, stealing, and hurting each other and Ef really don’t think it's because they caught a glimpse of the Sunshine Girl. t wish all those whiners would stop crying over something a minor as a girl wearing a bathing suit. [i's pretty darned pathetic if you ask me. P.S. Any plans of including a Sunshine Boy feature? Just ask- ing. Veronika Semora North Vancouver A A fn ails CAULFEILD Cc!
