Recycle unused building materials

FOR ALL the beauty and value that a home renovation
project can add to one’s personal living space, it can cre-
ate tons of pollution for our overflowing landfills.

Ted Rattray, president of Wastech Scrvices Ltd. in
Coquitlam, said the communities in the Greater
Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) create between
400,000 and 500,000 tons of demolition waste each year.
Situated on the old Coquitiarn landfill site, Wastech is
the only demotition waste recycler for the GVRD.

A most overlooked material of demolition waste, said
Rattray, is clean, untreated wood. Wastech hus begun a
program to encourage builders to salvage posts and
beams for recycling.

He said Wastech will charge a salvager $100 per

truckload of wood, as compared with the $400 charge te
dump it in a Jandfill.

“It has to be clean wood only. We also can’t take
wood that has teen painted or preserved.”

Rattray said Wastech’s program of recycling wood
has been well received, and he expects it to grow as the
costs of disposal increase. The recycled woud is turned
into fibre and sold to a mill for reprocessing.

The North Shore Transfer Station (NSTS) at 30
Riverside Dr. in North Vancouver alse accepts used
wood (for composting) as well as other household waste
materials such as corrugated cardboard, scrap metal, old
appliances and gyproc.

Some waste, such as used shingles and insulation, is
useless and is destined for the dump anyway. AH materi-
als from households are accepted free of charge except
