Most experts agree ozone depletion due to CFCs, chemicals Dear Editor: Conwary to a recent article by Greg Wilson (Consumers bearing ‘oat of ozone scare.” Dec. 10, 1993) that CFCs are not a threat to the ozone layer, there is abundant evidence that these chemicals are indeed an environmental hazard. The ozone layer has been declining by about 3% per decade in the mie- and low latitudes since . 1980. wa: The majority of atmospheric - scientists agree that this decline is _due-to the rising concentrations in he atmosphere of CFCs and relat- ed chemicals. , ‘In the Antarctic. where CFCs have definitely been linked to ozone depletion, the seasonal ozone hole this year wits the deep- est and longest-lasting on record. .. The Antarctic ozone hole did not exist until the late 1970s and carly 1980s, when CFC concentra- tions were becoming high. - Wilson notes that the emissions ‘of. CFCs are dwarfed by the mil- lions of tons of chlorine released into the atmosphere by the oceans, : However, the vast majority of - this chlorine is in the form of. sea salt, which is quickly dissolved in rainwater and returned to earth, never rising the 30 kilometres above sea level needed to reach the ozone layer. The annual amount of chlorine injected into the ozone layer by volcanoes is also quite small in comparison to the more thaa 300,000 tons of chlorine from min-mide CFCs and related chemicals that find their way into the ozone layer each year, The increase of CFCs in the atmosphere is a serious problem. However, the international com- munity has agreed that elimination ‘of these ozone-depleting sub- stances is a necessily The rate of increase of the cun- _ centration of CFCs in the atmos- phere has slowed significantly in the last year due to this internation- al cooperation, Canadians should be proud to be a world leader in this environ- mental effort to protect the ozone layer, without which. life as we know it would not exist on this planet.
