| Star’s immigration series bang on, but 20 years late MIRACLES DO happen. I know. [ have just read a block-busting five-part series on immigration in the Toronto Star. Why a miracle? Because the major media have for the most Part ignored the immigration mess and played a key role in what has all the makings of a racial, cul- tural and financial disaster. A personal note. Twenty years ago the Star asked me to doa “*special” for it on immigration. It never ran. It didn’t fit the paper’s policy, which was liberal and Liberal. But this new series was bang cn even though it paid lip service to multicult and skirted the prospect of Canada becoming a suburb of China, India, etc. It was written by reporter Robert Stoffman, who took a year off to study the subject. Here are some of the facts and comments it contains. “*The annual level of 250,000 immigrants a year is too much even in normal economic times. In the midst of a recession it is in- sane. (David Foot, economist.) “*With 150,000 newcomers a year, Canada would still have more immigration per capita than the Australians, Ainericans, or anyone elsc in the world.” ‘*Immigration doesn't make you richer. lt makes a few Canadians, such as immigration lawyers, richer. It makes others, especially those who compete for unskilled jobs, poorer. States Stoffman, ‘*This old news has been kept as secret as if it were a formula for building a nuclear bomb."’ The system is not a net econom- ic gain to this country. ‘In the 19th and early ZOth centuries, the fastest growth in real incomes happened during periods of minimal immigration."’ Neil Swann, former research director of the Economic Council of Canada, is quoted as saying: **Why do so many people think immigration is an economic boon? I don't know. That's like asking why so many people think Elvis Prestey is still alive.”’ I can help Mr. Swann. [t's because Canada is thick with left-wing kooks and because Ot- tawa puts out bushels of factoids Doug Collins ON THE OTHER HAND that are meekly accepted by the lazy press. The recent delirious headlines in the Vancouver Sun on the joys of Asian business immigration was a case in point. Also, as the series states, all three parties have ignored the wishes of the people and have manipulated the immigration reg- ulations without telling the coun- try what they were doing. The articles were particularly incisive on the refugee question. “Since the federal Immigration and Refugce Board began operating in 1989, Canada has granted refugee status to thou- sands of people who would have no hope of getting such status in any other country."' In 1989 there was ‘a bizarre acceptance rate of 79% of appli- cants."” It is still 50%. But inter- nationally it is only 14%. (A fig- ure that would be much lower but for Canada’s idiotic performance.) “Australia accepts 7%, Den- mark and Sweden 10 and five respectively, and Finland one.” Before the war in Yugoslavia, the UN High Commission for Refugees found that only 42,290 people world-wide needed reset- tlement as political refugees. “Yet our 1992 plan calls for 58,000 —- 16,000 more than the figure for the whole world.”* It costs Canada $50,000 to pro- Robbery suspect arrested THE NORTH Vancouver RCMP have arrested a man in connection: with a recent robbery at the Petro Canada gas station at 1270 Lynn Valley Rd. . A police spokesman said the suspect arrived at the gas station at about 8:50 p.m. on Oct. 14 wearing a Halloween-type mask and robbed the business at knife-point of a quantity of ciga- rettes and cash. Charged with robbery is William Gillespie, 23, of 3440 Fromme Rd., North Vancouver. cess and take care of each claim- ant who arrives here, and the system is riddled with rackets. Some of the racketeers make up to $2 million a year. “*Refugees’* cost the Canadian taxpayer about $1 billion a year. “In Ontario alone, 28,500 claimants collected $248 million in welfare payment in the 1991-92 fiscal year, or 12% of the total welfare load.”’ “We are admitting people wha are illiterate in their own lan- guages and who have no mar- ketable skills in our industrial society.’ — Stanley Knight of Vancouver, former assistant depu- ty chairman of the refugee board, who quit in disgust. The board and its many branches are staffed to a great ex- tent by immigrants who can’t write in English and French. So to make things simple they often let the applicants in. Political patronage is the main factor in determining who gets those jobs and the salaries go up to $83,900. “Of those who fail to win ref- ugee status, only 52% leave the country. The rest go underground and stay illegally, or stay here by special permission of the minister of immizration.’’ Over the years, this column has carried just about all of what has now appeared in the Star. But I have quoted the series to show you that lam not a lone crank, shouting into the wind. There’s only one thing wrong with the Srar stuff. It is 20 years too late. But for me it's gloating time. ; “Guaranteed ARN E cellent RRS 10; Invest $10,913 today and receive $23,750 in 10 years, For more information, ptease cail | The North Shore’s only full Service Investment firm RBC DOMINION SECURITIES Meme of tix Bark 925-3131 201-250 15th Street, West Vancouver eee eee cen ee 2 ee es ee ee ce ee es Clip & Save mek Oe ee ee EN ee Oe Se Oe ee SCHOOL Carson Graham S.T A.
