Queen of Cumberland A NORTH Vancouver shipyard has built the latest addition to the B.C. Ferry Corp. (BCFC) fleet. The M.V. Queen of Cumberland was commissioned by Vancouver Shipyards Co. in North Vancouver on Saturday. “This new ferry, with the ca- pacity to carry 5O more cars than its sister ship, the Queen of Capilano, will significantly in- crease service on the Swartz Bay-Gulf Islands route for British Columbians and_ visitors,’ said B.C. Finance Minister Glen Clark, the minister responsible for the BCFC. He added that the construction of the Queen of Cumberland took one year and generated 240 person years of employment. The new ferry has the capacity to carry 306 passengers and crew and 127 vehicles. The vesset is 96 metres in length, has a loaded displacement of 2,500 tonnes and a service speed of 14 knots. The ship also has diesel electric propulsion and computerized engine rooms. Before servicing the new route, the vessel will undergo sea trials and crew familiarization for a minimum of two weeks beginning May !.
