SPORTS North Shore seniors make strong showing at Coquitlam meet NORTH SHORE seniors won several medals at the fourth an- nual B.C. Seniors Games held Sept. 4-7 in Coquitlam. Dave Adams of West Van- couver’s Hollyburn Country Club was a double gold medal winner in men’s badminton. In the over-65 men's doubles, he combined with Stan Sangdahl of Vancouver to defeat Ray Buck- and Gordon Nash of Port Alberni 15-4, 15-3. Adams then teamed with Lucille Holden of Vancouver to capture the over-65 mixed dou- bles crown with a victory over Kaye Kaminishi and Daphne Mar- tin of Kamloops 15-8, 15-0. Also in badminton, Bill Ray won a bronze ir mixed doubles (65-69) and a gold in men’s dou- bles. Adams was captain of a 13- member team representing zone four at the badminton champion- ships. Playing in five events in four age categories the team won 25 medals — 18 goid, three silver and four bronze. Also striking gold was Aldon Appleton, 76, who won the title in his age group in snooker. Ap- pleton won [3 out of 14 games. The North Vancouver resident heads the pool room at the West Vancouver Seniors Centre. North Vancouver runner Hans Weickardt hit the jackpot on the track. The 77-year-old won gold medals in the 1,500-metre, 400- metre and the 200-metre. He also won a silver medal in the !00- Metre, an event which he later confessed is ‘‘not my cup of tea.”’ Meanwhile, in table tennis Eileen Buchols of the Silver Har- bour Centre and Sonia Fynn of the West Vancouver Seniors Cen- tre won the silver medal in the ladies’ doubles 65 and over group. Silver Harbour’s Connie McGuinness won the gold in the ladies’ singles 55-64 age group as well as in the ladies’ doubles with partner Margaret Werner from Burnaby. In men’s Jack table tennis, “men's 4X Fulton won a gold in doubies (65-plus) and a siiver in) men’s singles while George Smith, 64, won a silver in singles and a bronze in doubles (60-64) . Tennis results saw Joyce Noel, 66, of North Vancouver win a gold in ladies’ doubles (60-64), a silver in ladies’ singles (55-59), and a bronze in doubles (55-59). The team’s four victories in- cluded wins over B.C. champion Richmond and Oregon state champion Lake Osewago of Portiand. In all the team scored 18 goals while allowing only one goal. The North Shore squad was led by goalkeeper David Bochmer, Ali Kashfia, Chung Ming Ip and MVP Ryan McKenzie.
