THE NEW SAVOURY RESTAU- RANT, 4390 GALLANT AVENUE, NORTH VAN- COUVER, 929-2373 After being closed for almost a year while its original location was torn down and its new location constructed in the Gallant Avenue demolition zone, the Savoury reopened on Good Friday to ap- plause from diners all over the Deep Cove area. Augusto Pecorelli’s new restau- rant is slightly smaller than the original, seating about 48 com- pared with 65 in the old Savoury, but it has a new menu and, because it occupies the ground floor or a new building on the site of the old Nutshell restaurant, it has a marvellous new view of Deep Cove harbor. Stay tuned for a compiete Table Hopping critique. SEA MATES SEAFOOD RES- TAURANT, 998 MARINE DRIVE, NORTH VANCOUVER, 980-1213 The crew at the Mates have recently signed back aboard a larger, modernized version of this consistently popular seafood res- taurant. Owner Peter Chiu closed Sea Mates in mid-January to expand the restaurant eastward into the adjoining storefront. Two months later the newer, brighter Sea Mates was launched. Another dozen Sea Mates seats have been added, bringing the total close to 100. But of more in- terest to Sea Mates regulars will be the new elbow room allotted diners. Sea Mates, now into its 16th year, also plans to overhaul its menu within the next few months. Timothy Renshaw TABLE HOPPING SAKI’S 22ND STREET CAFE, 2220 MARINE DRIVE, WEST VANCOUVER, 925-2218. Simon Dimakis opened Saki’s in February on the site of the original 22nd Street Cafe after that restau- rant, renowned for its excellent breakfast and luncheon fare, changed hands, then suddenly closed. Saki’s is a departure from its predecessor, which offered hearty West Coast new-age food in abundant servings. The new res- taurant serves Greek cuisine every day from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., ex- cept Sundays, when it is open for dinner only. The menu is small, consistent with Saki’s small 40-seat cafe size, and its prices are reasonable: the most expensive selection is a $10.95 order of Garlic Prawns. Saki’s is the first restaurant own- ership venture for Dimakis, who has worked in a number of downtown Greek restaurants such as The Simpatico Ristorante. Watch this space for a full Table Hopping assessment of Saki’s. THE MONTEREY LOUNGE & GRiLL AT THE PACIFIC PALI- SADES HOTEL, 1277 ROBSON STREET VANCOUVER, 688-0461 The Palisades reopened April 4 following an $8-million overhaul that has renovated and redesigned 925-1945 Dinner Lunch Sunday Brunch the hotel’s public areas, its meeting and banquet facilities, its 233 guest suites, and its dining areas. The new Monterey Lounge & Griilis pan of the new Palisades and features a &8-seat lounge area and an 80-seal restaurant. Its menu will showcase chef Anne Milne’s affectron for south- western American cuisine influ- enced by the cuisines of Italy and the Orient. Expect light and lively foods. And while you’re downtown, don’t forget the dancing special at the Hotel Vancouver's Roof res- taurant: people who dine at the Roof before 7 p.m. an Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday nights will have 50 per cent taken off the price of their meals.
