To be eligible, Car of the Year entries must be new or significantly improved for 1991. To develop their shori-hst, more than 30 members of the AJAC spent two days evaluating some 70 new-modef cars Nov. 2-3. Their track and road tests took place at and around Shan- nonville Motorsport Park, near Belleville, Ont. The next step entails farther one-week tests of the semi- finalist vehicles. followed by a full national ballot involving some 70 AJAC members. Results will be announced Feb. 13, on the eve of the Toronto Auto Show, IT IS ironic that people will spend hundreds of dollars on accessories for their cars, such as elaborate wheel covers, stereos and mobile telephones, vet fail to take care of one of the least expensive and most important pieces of equipment for safe winter driving — windshield wipers. “The key to safe driving is clear windshield visibility,’’ says Jennifer Runyeon, president of Life- time Automotive Products, Inc. *‘Yet most drivers wait until wiper blades are far beyond minimum per- formance levels before changing them.” According to the Car Care Council, wiper blades should be replaced every six to eight months depen- ding on their level of use or non-use. In the intense heat of summer, wipers are used infrequently and sit idle on hot windshields for extended periods of time.
