How do you like living in West
Vancouver?: ‘“‘We fike it very
much, Originally when we came it
was quite a change from Califor-
nia. Now thai we've been here for
13 years we find that Vancouver
has to be one of the most
beautiful places in the world. In
California, it’s hot most of the
time with very little rain. As a
result of that, things are not as
green and as pleasant as they are
here, including the fact that the
tain washes the dirt away, which
makes our place a very clean
place.”’

What do you like to do to relax?:
“*E like to do sports. | play golf
and a little bit of tennis and a lit-
Ue bit of chess. I'm a sports fan. I
like to watch interesting games on
TV: hockey, basketball.”

How does someone become a
freight-forwarder?: ‘‘I’m an in-
ternational freight-forwarder and
freight-forwarding is a very
specialized business in Europe.
People who become freight-for-
warders go through an appren-
ticeship. You go to school and
you are an apprentice at a com-
pany where you learn your trade.
You’re entitled to take off one

day a week, at which time you go
to trade scheol. Whatever you
learned in practical terms at the
company, you have an opportuni-
ty to discuss it with your teachers
and learn the theory behind it.”

Has the Vancouver Wharves’
crane project been your biggest
project?: ‘‘That has been my big-
gest project since | have been on
my own. In my previous employ-
ment I was involved with tremen-
dously large projects all over the
world. The key on that (crane)
was that we acted in two
capacities; firstly as a freight-
forwarder on behalf of the sup-
pliers who were responsible for
getting the equipment to the site,
but they were not responsible for
the actual customs importation in-
to Canada. That responsibility
was with the engineering com-
pany, which was a large company
in England, and they, in-
dependently from the movement
of the freight, appointed us as the
customs brokers as well. As far as
we can tell they were all very
happy with our work.”’

How did you get into this fine of
work?: ‘‘In Germany we have
what is called a gymnasium. It’s

not like a gymnasium here where
you work out. A gymnasium over
there is equivalent to a college you
would have over here. When |!
finished with my term in college I
really didn't know what I wanted
to do. I went to a manpower
agency for certain tests as to what
they thought might be something |
might be good at. They came back
and said basically either the travel
industry or the freight-forwarding
industry. Actually, both are very
similar. With one you transport
goods and with the other you ar-
range for the transportation of
people.”’

On the role his employees play in
his company’s success: ‘‘I offer a
tribute to my staff whose hard
work and dedication allows Jagro
to produce excellent services and
efficiency to which our chents are
accustomed.’’

How is business these days?:
“‘Business is very good. We find
we get a lot of referral business
because people are pleased with
the service we give. When people
come to us because they have been
referred to us, it’s good. It's very,
very satisfying to get business on
that basis.”
