People who become freight-for- warders go through an appren- ticeship. You go to school and you are an apprentice at a com- pany where you learn your trade. In my previous employ- ment I was involved with tremen- dously large projects all over the world. The key on that (crane) was that we acted in two capacities; firstly as a freight- forwarder on behalf of the sup- pliers who were responsible for getting the equipment to the site, but they were not responsible for the actual customs importation in- to Canada. That responsibility was with the engineering com- pany, which was a large company in England, and they, in- dependently from the movement of the freight, appointed us as the customs brokers as well. As far as we can tell they were all very happy with our work.”’ How did you get into this fine of work?: ‘‘In Germany we have what is called a gymnasium. We find we get a lot of referral business because people are pleased with the service we give. When people come to us because they have been referred to us, it’s good.
