Flames stop Express IN A pair of weekend West Coast Junior Hockey League games, the North Shore Winter Club Flames snapped a four-game losing streak with a penalty-filled 9-7 win over the Hastings Express on Saturday, but then were stopped 5-1 by the Northwest Americans the follow- ing night in Seattle. On Saturday’s game, the two teams traded power-play goals ear- ly in the first frame. The Flames opened the scoring when Brad Costa converted from John Cox and Sean Morrison at 3:13, and then the Express replied just over a minute later. After Hastings took the lead midway through the period, Kevin Bukr paired with Rob Tournier at 13:32 for the Flames’ equalizer. Four minutes later Mike Grif- fiths connected on the power play from Rick Rougeau and Dave Shepard for a 3-2 lead after one. The Flames outscored the Ex- press 4-2 in the second period, the locals adding power-play markers by Buhr from Scott Gordon and Tim Stoddari, ‘hen Wade Bartok from Costa and Gordon. Rougeau’s unassisted tally, and a goal by Costa from Buhr and Bar- tok (also while the teams were playing at equal strength) left the Flames ahead 7-4 at the end of two periods. By the midway mar of the final frame, the Flames had stretched their lead to 9-4 on a power-play goal by Gordon from Morrison, and then a marker by Cox from Costa and Gordon with the teams at full strength. The Express closed out the scoring with three power- play goals late in the period for the 9-7 final. Over the three periods the Flames ouishot the Express 36-34 with Gary Knight in goal. In Seattle, the effects of the previous night’s rugged contest, and a roster short five key players played a part in the team’s 5-1 loss to Seattle. The teams were tied 1-1 after one, and 1-1 again after two periods, before Seattle took con- trol in the third, despite the valiant work of Flame goaltender Kevin Eadbourne.
